Why are we responsible to build the playground?
When our new K-9 David Thomas King School was built and opened in September 2017, a playground was not included. This is because playgrounds are not a requirement for new school construction; the responsibility lies with the community league and area residents.
On average, construction of new playgrounds ranges in cost from $500,000 to $1 million, depending on features and surrounding infrastructure. We currently have $250,000 allocated from the Provincial Playground Grant fund for new schools and potentially up to $250,000 in grant money through the City of Edmonton’s Neighbourhood Park Development Program fund. This means as a community we must generate the remaining funds in order for a playground to be built.
We are fundraising in partnership with the following key stakeholders:
- David Thomas King School and its Parent Council;
- The City of Edmonton;
- Various funding and granting agencies; and
- the corporate community.
